It’s early! We harvested our whites between Sept. 14 – 20, a full two weeks earlier than normal. But the 2018 growing season saw hot temperatures which promoted good concentration of sugars in the grapes and sufficient rain to keep everything growing. The reds are next but holding steady.
The white we picked first was Pinot Grigio. It’s only our second vintage of this interesting grape variety and we are learning a lot. Did you know that Pinot Grigio is a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir? This mutation occurred naturally in a vineyard possibly a century ago. You can still see the relationship to Pinot Noir in the colour of Pinot Grigio grape skins which vary from bluish-grey to pinkish-brown and often Pinot Grigio wines have a copper-pink hue to them.
Wines made from this grape variety can be classified as either Pinot Grigio, indicating lean, crisp, wines with some orchard fruit and minerality. When classified as Pinot Gris, it signals that the wine was made in a fuller-bodied style, rich, floral and often spicy. So wine making style, climate, and the soil determine this grape’s flavour profile. Have you tried ours?
Why not take advantage of our current promotion, free shipping on wine orders of $150 CAD (or more) from September 22 to October 22, 2018, and try our 2017 Organic Pinot Grigio. After all, we have to make room for this year’s vintage.
